Week 3 Little Nemo and Krazy Kat

For week 3 I spend time reading parts of Winsor McCay's Little Nemo, George Herriman's Krazy Kat, and Charles Schulz's Peanuts (The Complete Peanuts Vol. 1 1950-52). I am familiar with Krazy Kat and Peanuts so I spent more time reading Little Nemo comics because I was unfamiliar since I have never read any of them before. My first impression of Little Nemo In the Palace of Ice was shock because I was so impressed by the quality of the illustrations, the style resembles that of the Art Nouveau movement. I found myself so lost in the illustrations that I overlooked the speech bubbles and instead tried to understand the sequence of events based on the movement and gestures of the characters themselves. In comparison to the other comics that I read this week, Mccay’s comics are full of color, detailed characters, and backgrounds.

The work from Krazy Kat and Peanuts were both in black and white and were simple. To me, I found the illustrations from Krazy Kat a bit crude in style, the linework was rough and scraggly compared to the Peanuts comics which had smooth lines. There was more shading in the Krazy Kat comics which provided more depth, unlike the Peanuts comics which I felt lacked contrast. The Krazy Kat comics contained some background details while the Peanuts comics that I read did not which lead me to only focus on the characters.

Out of all the comics I read this week, the Little Nemo comics to be my favorite because of the captivating illustration. I used to read comics whenever my dad bought a newspaper home from work and I think I am drawn to the Little Nemo comics because I haven’t seen anything like it before. I will definitely look at more of McCay’s comics in the future.
